We are a martial arts school that is dedicated to inspiring our students to improve physically and mentally and to help them develop the confidence to live an extraordinary life.
Team Phoenix teaches Muay Thai, Shoot Wrestling, Kali, and Kids Ju-jitsu to a diverse community of people from all ages, backgrounds and walks of life.
Everyone has different reasons and goals for training, be it fun, fitness, self-defence, self improvement, achievement, learning new skills or increased self-confidence. Our team will work to the best of our abilities to help you achieve your goals.
Team Phoenix has proudly been located in the Ouseburn Valley since 2002. Experienced instructors teach a diverse range of arts with a focus on personal development.
Our Classes
What sort of thing are you looking for? We offer classes in 3 martial arts as well as our kids classes to help you achieve your goals. If you are interested in striking then our Muay Thai class is for you. If its grappling you are after then our Shoot Wrestling class will be a good fit for you. If you want to learn weapon skills then our Kali program is what you are after.
All of our classes have have common tactical and technical threads so that you will feel right at home in any of them! All of our classes are beginner friendly and are focused on fun fitness and community. We don't offer competition training, so if that is what you are looking for then we may not be for you.

Muay Thai
Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and has a rich history. The Roots of Muay Thai date back to the battlefields of Siam where the Thais used the ancient arts of Muay Boran and Krabi Krabong to defend their homeland. Today the ring sport of Muay Thai uses punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and clinch work and is practiced all over the world.
As well as being an amazing workout, Team Phoenix Muay Thai is fantastic for building inner strength and confidence
What to expect: Muay Thai Classes at Team Phoenix consist of technical training to give you the correct technique, as well as pad work, sparring, stamina, and conditioning training.
Shoot Wrestling
Shoot Wrestling is a Japanese Style of grappling known for its high energy, dynamic transitions and spectacular submissions.
If you want to learn grappling in a friendly and non-intimidating environment, this is the class for you! We have a full grading curriculum for goal setting and skill progression.
What to expect: In this class, you will learn Clinch, Takedowns, Ground positioning, Submissions, and Escapes. Classes include warm-ups, technical training, conditioning, and rolling.
Kali
Originally used by the indigenous people of the Philippines to defend their homeland, we have distilled this vast amount of knowledge into a fun and safe way to teach you how to train and spar with and without weapons.
We will teach you how to hit pads and spar with a single stick, double stick, staff, sarong and training knife in a fun and competitive way.
You will also learn how to defend against a weapon if you are unarmed.
We have a full grading curriculum for goal setting and progression
What to expect: In this class, you will be learning Empty hand and weapon skills in technical training, pad work, conditioning and sparring.
Phoenix Kids
Our aim is to produce the best from your child!
Our classes build on your Child's confidence, giving them the physical and mental attributes that they will use throughout their lives.
The class focuses on teaching the basics of Ju-Jitsu and self defence and also teach children about themselves and their capabilities. We have a comprehensive grading curriculum to help them progress from white to black belt
All instructors are CRB checked and have undergone child protection training and first aid training. All qualifications on public display.
Parents are welcome at any class and staff will be happy to discuss any part of the training, organisation or practises of the club.

getting started at Team Phoenix is easy!

New starters are welcome to join in any class as we cater to all levels.
Already know what you are looking for? Sign up for your free week trial here.
On the day of your trial, you can find us via the map on the contact us area of this website or, if you have any problems finding us, give us a call.
For your trial session, all you need is a T-shirt, shorts/tracksuit bottoms, and a bottle of water. We will provide everything else unless you have your own pads and gloves that you would like to use.
If you can arrive 10 or 15 mins before the class you want to try we can fill out a quick registration form, give you the tour, and answer any questions you may have. Then you will be ready to get started.

Who we are
Team Phoenix is about unity, self-improvement, acceptance, tolerance, friendship, and community. We are a bunch of like-minded individuals who are passionate about martial arts and have created a space where you can improve yourself physically and mentally without judgment.
Whatever your goals are, we will help you to achieve them. Since 1997 it has been our honour and privilege to work with thousands of students to help them learn and grow.
Whether you are with us for a month or a decade we hope you gain something you can take forward into the rest of your life.
Team Phoenix is a full-time Martial Arts School that teaches a variety of arts from around the world.
We have a 195sqm training area with heavy bags, kick shields, and all the pads and gloves you could wish for! We have a warm-up area with skipping ropes, kettlebells, and Swiss balls for all of your pre or post-training workout needs. Changing rooms, toilets, and our relaxing lounge area complete with a complimentary lending library is available for all members!

About Matthew Teasdale:
My passion is to teach and train martial arts and to inspire my students to live their best life. I am constantly striving to develop my teaching methodology so I can give my best to my students.
I love being part of a group that doesn't take itself too seriously even though we are serious about training!
I have been training in a wide range of martial arts since my mother enrolled me in a Taekwondo class in 1992. I began teaching in 1997 and have been teaching full-time since 2001.
I have had the privilege to teach and train all over the world and with some amazing and inspiring people. My main coaches and influences are Ron Balicki, Johan Skalberg, Richard Smith, Liam Harrison, Andy Howsen, Rungchai Makete, and Kowlan Lek.
I have worked as a Door supervisor, security guard, and close protection officer.
